Dear Purdue Community:
The 2014 Fall Theme for the Division of Diversity and Inclusion Programming is “Be the Change You Want to see.” This very familiar quote is a clarion call for campus action. Our diversity programming will provide numerous opportunities for all community members to learn more about those who are different from themselves. We MUST commit to learn more about diverse issues.
Second, we are making a call to hold ourselves and our fellow man to a standard of behavior that is suiting the Boilermaker community, a community that is inclusive, that expects diversity and daily demonstrates behaviors that exemplify a respect for the differences that we each bring to the community.
Next, we call the community to remember. Remember that WE each make Purdue, the community that it is ... for the good or the bad. However, we call upon each of us to do our part to add positively to our inclusive environment. Remember that diversity is about people, perhaps different from you, but it is about people.
Finally we call upon you to have courage. We ask that you display daily the type of courage that allows you to call out and challenge behaviors that work against our goal of building a diverse and welcoming campus community.
We invite you to frequently visit our website for program updates. We hope you will join us for a lecture by civil rights activist Julian Bond on November 4, 2014, in Loeb Theatre at 7 p.m. Mr. Bond’s lecture will underscore the 50th anniversary of Freedom Summer and the Civil Rights Act. Have a great fall semester!
